Now that I've switched to official Soylent, I realize how close the taste of my old favorite DIY recipe was to Version 1.3. Since a lot of people (myself included) prefer the taste of 1.3 to 1.4, I figured I might as well make this recipe public. If you don't have a problem with lactose or gluten (the Mega Men powder contains wheat), it's definitely worth a try.

Recipe notes:

  • The Bob's Gluten-Free Oat Flour was chosen because it seemed to give the best texture. A 25-pound bag is ~$60 with shipping, though, so if you want to lower your costs more you could try the 50-pound bag of oat flour on Amazon.
  • Because I use soy lecithin as the sole source of choline, there's none of that gross choline bitartrate taste you sometimes get hints of with 1.3. It also helps prevent separation!
  • I'm not sure if there's a way to get Honeyville maltodextrin in anything less than a 50-pound sack, but it has the same DE as the maltodextrin in official Soylent (10), and shouldn't cause spikes in blood sugar. I can't say the same for the NOW Carbo Gain stuff.
  • Flaxseed oil provides a ~2:1 Omega-6:Omega 3 ratio.
  • If you want a cheaper, simpler version of this recipe, both the flaxseed oil and the xanthan gum can be left out without a big impact on nutrition or taste/texture. I'd definitely recommend both of them, though.

Preparation:

  • I mix each day of soylent in its own ziploc bag, as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir04Yv5Gj9w. The tiny tupperware container of oil helps ensure you get the proper amounts of soybean and flaxseed oil every day.
  • For the best texture, I recommend 1 cup of dry powder per 28oz blender bottle. I measure it out as two half-cup scoops, then fill the bottle with cold water, shake it up, add some oil from the tupperware, top it off with water, and shake some more. For a while I would also add a tiny amount of vanilla extract to each bottle, but I'm not sure if it actually did anything. The vanilla Mega Men powder probably plays the biggest role in flavoring.

The thing i genially liked about the site is that it is not only giving us the recipe but also the link to buy the ingredients that are being used in the recipe. After finished my work for Tanzania vaccinations, i will try this for sure. Thanks for the nice post.
