This recipe is meant to provide full control over each nutrient individually. It is a framework for experimentation, and a first step towards the vision of machine-making, fully-customizable, on-demand soylent. I would not advice to go full-time with this recipe for months without close health monitoring. Feedbacks are more than welcome.

Cost

Some of the micros could be better sourced, but the bulk of the cost comes from the macros and nootropics like Alpha GPC. You can consider shopping around for better sources. Be careful of the fact that a lot of products pre-mix many nutrients together, while the objective of this recipe is to keep full control over the mixing.

Pre-mixing

Powders and liquids can be mixed separately and stored for several weeks in the fridge. Zip-bags are perfect containers for powders − one bag per daily supply, try removing as much air as possible. Small tinted glass flasks work well for liquids − they protect against air and light.

If you want to add the fish oil in your liquid mix, the best way to open a softgel is to rub its tip along a knife's cutting edge until it pierces, then squeeze the oil out into the liquid mix.

Mixing

For best result, mix your powders and liquids in a blender. Add at least 1L of water, and pre-mix a bit with a spoon to make the work easier on the blender's motor. Make sure the water is very cold as frictions during the blending can warm up the soylent and possibly damage the vitamins. Store your water in the fridge or blend ice before adding the powders.

Add an additional 1L or 2L of water after blending (to soften the salty taste).

Micros preparation

For experimentation, it is best to mix the micros (vitamins and minerals) on a daily basis. Empty the vcaps fully, by half or by a fourth according to the recipe, and close them back for the next day.

In the long run, it can be easier to mix the micros for at least 30 days in a row − and join them later with the macros.

Taste

The taste is quite neutral. Fish oil is the most expressive. You can consider taking it separately.

Flavoring can be achieved by adding sugar and cocoa or vanillin. Do reduce iron supplement if you add cocoa. An alternative way of flavoring is to replace one or two thirds of the whey proteins with a flavored version (of your liking).

Caffeine

Caffeine is optional. Make sure to compensate calcium and phosphorus is you remove it.

Caffeine can be added separately in your morning blend only, as it deteriorates sleep when taken late in the day. Beware it is slightly bitter. Add more water to reduce the bitterness.

Fibers

If your digestive system is not accustomed to high soluble fibers, you might consider starting with a lower amount of acacia fiber, and increase it progressively.

Glycemic Index

Maltodextrin has a high glycemic index. It is partly lowered by the addition of soluble fiber, which slows down its absorption.

If you are having sugar highs, consider taking smaller portions (just a few sips) more frequently.

If high GI is still a problem to you, you can consider :

  • Reducing the amount of maltodextrin and compensating with MCT oil (for calories),
  • Adding resistant starch,
  • replacing part of the maltodextrin with palatinose.

Replacing part of the maltodextrin with oat flour (like in the official Soylent) defeats the objective of keeping nutrients independent. Oat flour comes with a large set of micro-nutrients.

Nutrients to consider adding…

  • Boron,
  • Silica,
  • Lycopene,
  • Lutein,
  • Other phytonutrients and nootropics.
